Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
Mom had a whole bag full of cookie cutters. We would make these cookies in shapes like candy canes, stars, flowers, hearts, and Christmas trees. They are time consuming to make, but worth the effort, especially as gifts.
Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
3 cups flour
1 cup sugar
1 ½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
1 cup butter or margarine, room temperature
1 egg, slightly beaten
3 tbsp. cream
1 tsp. vanilla
Place flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in mixing bowl; cut in butter using mixer ot pastry blender until particles are fine. Add egg, cream and vanilla; blend well. Chill dough for easier handling.
Roll out on floured surface, 1/3 at a time to 1/8″ thickness. Sprinkle with granulated sugar, cut into desired shapes. Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 400o for 6/8 minutes, or until cookies are lightly browned at edges.
NOTES: you can use colored sugar for topping the cookies. Sprinkle the sugar on the cookies after you place the cookies on the cookie sheets so the colored sugar won’t get rolled into the dough.
